Instructions

1. Body – Start in Rounds

Foundation:
Ch 160 (or to fit bust/hip, in multiples of 2). Join with care not to twist.

Round 1:
Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each ch around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.

Round 2:
Ch 3, TURN. Dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.

Round 3:
Ch 3, TURN. Dc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch-3.

2. Pattern Repeat (4 Rounds)

Round 4 (Puff Pattern):
Ch 3 (counts as dc), Puff st (see above) around post of previous dc below ch-3,
Skip next st, in next st: make a long dc,
Puff st around post, skip next st, long dc in next.
Rep * until end of round. Join with sl st (see “Pattern Correction” if needed).

Round 5:
Ch 3, TURN. Dc in st over puff st, dc in st between puffs—work dc in each st around. Join.

Round 6:
Ch 3, TURN. Dc in each st around. Join.

Round 7:
Ch 3, TURN. Dc in each st around. Join.

REPEAT ROUNDS 4–7:
Continue the established four-round pattern (Rounds 4–7) until you have repeated the set 10 times from the start (about to the underarm).

3. Separate for Front & Back (Work in Rows)

  • Divide total stitches evenly: e.g., 80 sts each for front and back.
  • Mark division with stitch markers.

Front (work in rows)

  1. Ch 3, turn. Work dc in each st across to marker (80 dc).
  2. Rep established four-row pattern (as in rounds) for 3 repeats (i.e., [dc row, dc row, puff row, dc row] × 3).
  3. Shape Shoulders & Collar:
    a. With RS facing, mark center 40 sts for neckline. Leaving these unworked, work decreases at shoulder edges as follows:
    b. Decrease Row: Join at shoulder edge, ch 3, turn. Starting at edge, work dc3tog (over 3 sts—see Special Stitches), dc in each st across.
    c. Work next row even in dc.
    d. Work next row as puff row.
    e. Work 1–2 more rows in dc as needed for shoulder length.
    f. Repeat for opposite shoulder.

Back (work in rows)

  1. Attach yarn at armhole edge. Work across 80 sts, maintaining established pattern repeat, for same number of rows as front.
  2. No neck shaping—work straight.

4. Join Shoulders

  • With WS together, use sl st or sc to seam front shoulders to back along the last rows, matching row for row.

5. Sleeves (Work in Rounds)

  1. Join yarn at armhole. Ch 2, evenly dc around armhole, adjusting so you have ~68 dc.
  2. Join with sl st to first dc. (Ch 2 serves as decrease, see notes.)
  3. Ch 2, turn; dc in each st around. Before joining each round, skip the starting ch-2 to decrease one st per round.
  4. Continue in established body pattern: work 3 rounds dc, then 1 round puff pattern.
    • Continue (with or without further decreases as desired for sleeve taper) to wrist.
    • Sample: Switch to 3 rounds of dc before final border.

6. Sleeve & Body Edging

Final Round (Cuff & Hem):

  1. Ch 3, puff st (with 4 yarn overs) in same st,
  2. Skip 2 sts, sc in next st,
  3. Ch 3, puff st in same st, skip 2, sc in next, repeat around.
  4. Join with sl st to puff st at start.
  • Repeat border on hem and collar edge as desired.

7. Collar

  • With WS facing, join yarn at one edge of neckline.
  • Work the puff/dc border pattern evenly around neckline, or add additional dc rows as desired for height.

Pattern Corrections & Tips

Pattern Correction:

  • If you crochet tightly, the joining sl st at the end of puff rows can be hard to see; insert your hook under both loops at the top of the first puff/dc to avoid uneven seams.
  • Stitch count must be a multiple of 2. Adjust as needed for larger/smaller sizes.

Tips:

  • Always turn your work at the start of each round for cleaner edges.
  • For a larger size, increase starting chain by multiples of 2; for a smaller size, decrease accordingly.
  • The “skip stitch and long dc” maintain the openwork effect and proper pattern alignment.
  • Block your sweater for perfect finishing.

Conclusion

This sweater is soft, textural, and modern using a rhythmic puff and dc repeat. The construction is simple and adaptable to any size. Final border details add a handmade, decorative touch. Try with different yarns for unique results!
