IKEA Hack – DIY Washi Tape Stool

It’s time for an IKEA hack on the blog today! I’m going to show you how to take this IKEA Frosta Stool and customise it to make your very own DIY Washi Tape Stool. This is really simple and works out pretty cheaply too as the stool is only £8.

Grab a selection of washi tapes in contrasting colours and patterns. I would recommend Etsy as the best place to buy washi tapes but you can also find them in big stores such as Hobbycraft.

About a year ago, I painted my stool (very badly) so the washi tape does a good job of covering that!

Begin by covering your stool with the washi tape, smoothing out any creases or bubbles for each strip. The good thing about washi, is if you mess up you can just peel it back with no residue left.

I started with 3 rows of one colour and made sure the tape covered the edge of the stool.

Then alternate to your second and third colours, repeating the process.

It doesn’t take long at all and you can mix up the colours and patterns to suit your decor.

Once the top of your stool is covered with the washi tape, you can then choose one of the tapes to cover the edge. This will conceal the raw edges. If you are using standard width washi, you will probably need to do 2 rounds to cover the edge of the stool.

And that’s it! Super simple and it can be changed whenever you like as washi tape just peels right off. An optional step would be to seal with a coat of Mod Podge.

This could also work for table tops or anything with a flat surface. Next time I think I’ll experiment with other tape combos and perhaps venture away from stripes. For a more permanent version, you could use duct tape and cover with glass or perspex.

What do you think? Have you found any great IKEA hacks lately?

  1. Fab idea! I have a telephone table in need of tlc, I am definitely going to consider this idea as I’ve struggled to find the paint colour I want yet but this would be a perfect idea instead of painting! Thank you x
