Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight acrylic yarn in red, brown, black, and orange
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook (body)
  • 3 mm crochet hook (legs)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needles
  • 3 stitch markers
  • 7 mm safety eyes
  • Polyester fiber fill

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • rnd: round

Wings:

Left Wing:

  1. Create a slip knot.
  2. Row 1: Ch 9. Starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each chain across. (8 sc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last st. (8 sts)
  4. (Continuing Row 2) In the last st, do: 2 sc, ch 3, sc. Turn to work on the other side.
  5. Sc in next 8 sts, sl st to first sc, fasten off and weave in ends.

Right Wing:

Repeat Row 1 of the left wing.

  1. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first 8 sts.
  2. In 3rd-to-last st, do: sc, ch 3, 2 sc. Turn to work on the other side.
  3. Hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next, hdc in next 2, sc in last two sts. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Body:

  1. Rnd 1: With red yarn, make a magic circle, 6 sc into circle. (6 sc)
  2. Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
  3. Rnd 3: (2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st) around. (18 sc)
  4. Rnd 4: Switch to black yarn in the first st, sc in next 5 sts in black, switch back to red, sc in remaining sts. (18 sts)
  5. Rnd 5: Red: sc in next; Black: sc in 5; Red: sc in remaining. Continuing with red, attach right wing across 4 sts. (18 sts)
  6. Rnd 6: Sc in next 17 sts, increase in last 4 sts. (25 sts)
  7. Rnd 7: Sc in next 3 sts, decrease, sc in next 4 sts, decrease, sc in next 6 sts, attach left wing across 4 sts. (25 sts)

  11. Rnd 11: Sc decrease, sc, around. Attach eyes between Rnds 4 and 5. Use fiber fill to stuff the bird. (14 sts)
  12. Rnd 12: Decrease around, join with sl st. Fasten off and close opening using yarn needle.

Tail:

  1. With red yarn, at the end of the bird’s body, join with sl st and ch 6.
  2. Starting from 2nd ch from hook, sc across, sl st to next st.
  3. Turn, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in last st. Continue for several rows to form a rounded tail.

Beak:

  1. With orange yarn, join in Rnd 5, ch 2.
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in same st. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Legs (Optional):

  1. With brown yarn, attach yarn to marked st under the body.
  2. Ch 2, sl st back through second ch from hook and original marked st, forming toes. Repeat twice more.
  3. Finish with a sc in the marked chain and sl st, fasten off, and weave in ends.
