How To Crochet Chunky Basket

 Materials Needed:

  • 100 yards of super bulky yarn, divided into two balls (Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick is used in the video)
  • 8 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Create the Base:
    • Hold the yarns together to make the basket more sturdy.
    • Make a magic circle.
    • Chain 1.
  2. Round 1:
    • Work 10 single crochets into the magic circle.
    • Pull the tail to close the circle.
    • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round.
  3. Round 2:
    • Chain 1.
    • Work 2 single crochets into every stitch around (total of 20 single crochets).
    • Carry the tail from the beginning of the project along with the stitches to avoid weaving it in later.
    • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round.
    • Cut the remaining tail.
  4. Round 3:
    • Chain 1.
    • Work 1 single crochet into the first stitch, then work 2 single crochets into the next stitch.
    • Repeat from * to * around.
    • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round.
  5. Round 4:
    • Chain 1.
    • Work 1 single crochet into the back loop only of every stitch around.
    • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round.
  6. Rounds 5-8 (Sides):
    • Chain 1.
    • Work 1 single crochet through both loops of each stitch around.
    • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round.
    • Repeat for a total of 4 rounds.
  7. Creating the Handles:
    • Chain 5.
    • Skip 4 stitches and work 1 single crochet into the 5th stitch.
    • Work 11 single crochets (one in each of the next 10 stitches) on either side of the handle.
    • Chain 5.
    • Skip 4 stitches and work 1 single crochet into the 5th stitch.
    • Work 10 single crochets.
  8. Finishing the Handles:
    • Without slip stitching to join, work directly into the chain space.
    • In the chain space, work 6 single crochets to form a solid handle.
    • Work 11 single crochets around the remaining stitches.
    • Repeat for the other handle: work 6 single crochets into the handle chain space and 11 single crochets around the remaining stitches.
    • Slip stitch into the first stitch to complete the round.
  9. Finish:
    • Cut your yarn and weave in the ends with a tapestry needle.
