How To Crochet Abstract Granny Square

Materials Needed

  • Double Knit (DK) weight yarn (lightweight yarn) in 6 different colors
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook (size G7 hook)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Color Scheme

  • The pattern uses six colors. Substitute with your preferred colors as needed.

Instructions

Round 1

  1. Color: Purple
  2. Make a magic ring.
  3. Into the magic ring, work the following:
    • 1 DC (UK) / 1 SC (US)
    • 2 HTC (UK) / 2 HDC (US)
    • 2 TC (UK) / 2 DC (US)
    • 2 DTC (UK) / 2 TC (US)
    • 2 TC (UK) / 2 DC (US)
    • 2 HTC (UK) / 2 HDC (US)
    • 1 DC (UK) / 1 SC (US)
  4. You should have 12 stitches.
  5. Close the magic ring, cut the yarn, thread it onto a tapestry needle, and fasten off with an invisible join.

Round 2

  1. Color: Orange
  2. Make a slip knot on your hook.
  3. DC (UK) / SC (US) into the 2nd DTC (US) stitch made in Round 1.
  4. Into the same stitch:
    • Work another DC/SC.
  5. Into the next stitch:
    • Work 2 HTC/HDC in the next 2 stitches.
  6. Into the next stitch:
    • Work 2 TC/DC in the next 2 stitches.
  7. Into the next stitch:
    • Work 2 DTC/TC in the next 2 stitches.
  8. Reverse the stitch pattern to the end of the round.
  9. You should have 24 stitches.
  10. Cut the yarn, thread it onto a tapestry needle, and fasten off with an invisible join.

Round 3

  1. Color: Pink
  2. Make a slip knot and insert the hook.
  3. DC/SC into the 2nd last HTC/HDC made in Round 2.
  4. Work:
    • Another DC/SC in the same stitch.
    • Another DC/SC in the next stitch.
  5. Over the next 4 stitches:
    • Work HTC/HDC into the next 2 stitches.
    • Work 2 HTC/HDC in the next 2 stitches.
  6. Over the next 4 stitches:
    • Work TC/DC into the next 2 stitches.
    • Work 2 TC/DC into the next 2 stitches.
  7. Over the next 4 stitches:
    • Work DTC/TC into the next stitch.
    • Work 2 DTC/TC into the next 2 stitches.
    • Work one more DTC/TC in the last stitch.
  8. Reverse the stitch pattern to complete the round.
  9. You should have 36 stitches.
  10. Cut the yarn, thread on a tapestry needle, and fasten off with an invisible join.

Round 4

  1. Color: Aqua Green
  2. Make a slip knot and insert the hook.
  3. DC/SC into the 4th TC (US) made in Round 3.
  4. Work:
    • Another DC/SC in the same stitch.
    • DC/SC into the next 2 stitches.
  5. Over the next 6 stitches:
    • HTC/HDC into the next 4 stitches.
    • 2 HTC/HDC into the next 2 stitches.
  6. Over the next 6 stitches:
    • TC/DC into the next 4 stitches.
    • 2 TC/DC into the next 2 stitches.
  7. Over the next 6 stitches:
    • DTC/TC into the next 2 stitches.

    • DTC/TC into the final 2 stitches.
  8. Reverse the stitch pattern to complete the round.
  9. You should have 48 stitches.
  10. Cut the yarn, thread on a tapestry needle, and fasten off with an invisible join.

Round 5

  1. Color: Yellow
  2. Make a slip knot and insert the hook.
  3. HTC/HDC into any stitch.
  4. Work:
    • Another HTC/HDC in the same stitch.
    • HTC/HDC into the next 3 stitches.
    • 2 HTC/HDC in the next stitch.
  5. Repeat the sequence (1 HTC/HDC in next 3 stitches, 2 HTC/HDC in next stitch) around.
  6. You should have 60 stitches.
  7. Cut the yarn, thread on a tapestry needle, and fasten off with an invisible join.

Round 6

  1. Color: Green
  2. Make a slip knot and insert the hook.
  3. DTC/TC into any stitch.
  4. Work another DTC/TC in the same stitch.
  5. Work one side of the square:
    • DTC/TC into 14 stitches.
    • TC/DC into the next 3 stitches.
    • HTC/HDC into the next stitch.
    • DC/SC into the next 4 stitches.
    • HTC/HDC into the next stitch.
    • TC/DC into the next 3 stitches.
    • DTC/TC into the next 14 stitches.
  6. Create the corner:
    • 3 DTC/TC into the next stitch.
  7. Repeat the side pattern three more times.
  8. Finish the first corner, work 1 DTC/TC into the base of the first stitch of the round.
  9. Slip stitch into the top of the first stitch of Round 6.
  10. You should have 68 stitches.

Round 7

  1. Color: Continue with Green
  2. Chain 4 (counts as DTC/TC for the first corner).
  3. Work:
    • TC/DC into each stitch along the side to the next corner.
    • 3 DTC/TC into the middle stitch of three DTC/TC stitches from Round 6.
  4. Repeat the side and corner patterns three more times.
  5. Finish the first corner, work another DTC/TC into the base of the first stitch of Round 7.
  6. Slip stitch into the top of the first stitch.
  7. You should have 76 stitches.

Round 8

  1. Color: Green
  2. Chain 1.
  3. Work:
    • 2 DC/SC into the same stitch at the base of the chain 1.
  4. Continue around the granny square:
    • Work 1 DC/SC into each stitch to the corners.
    • Work 3 DC/SC into each corner.
  5. Finish the first corner, work another DC/SC into the base of the two corners stitches from the start of the round.
  6. Cut the yarn, thread on a tapestry needle, and fasten off with an invisible join.
  7. Sew in all your ends and block your square.
