Pattern

1. YOKE (Top Down, Joined Rounds)

With 5.5mm hook and main color, ch 80.

  1. Join: Slip stitch to first ch, making sure not to twist chain.
  2. Foundation Row: Ch 2 (counts as dc).
    • Dc in next 11 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch (First corner made).
    • Dc in next 16 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch (Second corner).
    • Dc in next 22 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch (Third corner).
    • Dc in next 16 ch, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch (Fourth corner).
    • Dc in last 11 ch. Join with sl st to top of starting ch-2.
  3. Next Rounds: (Increase Rounds)
    • Ch 2 (counts as dc), dc in each dc to ch-2 sp, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 space; rep at every corner. Dc in each st between corners. Join each round with sl st to top of ch-2. Ch 2, turn.
    • Repeat this “dc in each st, (dc, ch 2, dc) in each ch-2 corner” for 16 rounds total.
    • You should increase by 8 stitches every round.

2. BODY

  1. Joining for Body Round:
    • Fold yoke so that each section with 11 (or 16) and 22 stitches lines up as the front, back, and sides (see video for visual). When you reach a corner with a ch-2 space, pinch the two corner sections together.
    • Dc across to first corner, then sl st two corresponding corners together (effectively skipping the armhole stitches, and connecting front to back).
    • Dc across the back, sl st the next two corners together for the other armhole, then dc to the starting point.
    • Sl st to top of ch-2, ch 2 and turn.
  2. Main Body:
    • Continue dc in each stitch around, joining rounds with sl st and ch 2, turn after each round.
    • Work 14 rounds (or your preferred length).
    • Fasten off.

3. SLEEVES (Repeat for both)

  1. Join Yarn: Use 5.5mm hook. Join yarn at the underarm seam.
  2. Rnd 1: Ch 2, dc evenly around armhole. Sl st to ch-2.
  3. Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc2tog over first two sts (decrease), dc in each st, dc2tog over last two sts, sl st to join.
  4. Continue:
    • Repeat Rnd 1 (all dc), then Rnd 2 (decrease at both ends) alternately for a total of 25 rounds, or to desired sleeve length.
    • Fasten off.
    • Make second sleeve the same.

4. BORDERS (Cuffs, Bottom Edge, Collar)

Switch to 4.5mm hook for all borders and cuffs.

For Each Section (Bottom, Cuffs, Collar):

  1. Attach yarn at the seam or any stitch.
  2. Ch 8, turn.
  3. Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch to end (7 sc).
  4. Attach: Sl st in next 2 sts on sweater edge, turn.
  5. Row 2: Skip both sl sts, back loop sc (BLO sc) in each sc to end, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn.
  6. Row 3: Sc in 1st st, BLO sc in each sc to the end. Sl st up 2 on edge, turn.
  7. Repeat Rows 2-3 all the way around.
  8. Join foundation and final ribbing row with tapestry needle using whip stitch.
  9. Repeat for bottom hem, sleeve cuffs, and collar.

5. SUNFLOWER FLOWER APPLIQUÉ (Make as many as desired)

With 4.5mm hook and yellow (center):

  1. Ch 2.
  2. Rnd 1: 10 sc in first ch. Pull tail to tighten.
  3. Change to petal color (white):
    • Insert hook in first st, drop yellow, pick up white on yarn over and pull through (color change).
    • Ch 1.
  4. Rnd 2/Petals:
    • [Sc in next st, 5 dc in next st] repeat all the way around (forms petals).
    • You will end with 5 petals.
    • Sl st to first st. Fasten off.

6. ATTACHING THE FLOWERS

  • Arrange flowers as desired on sweater front, back, and/or sleeves.
  • Using tapestry needle, thread yarn tail from petal edge. Sew around the flower, picking up sts from the flower and through the sweater’s stitches. Continue around, tightening gently for a flat finish. Weave in ends.
  • Repeat for all flowers.

7. FINISHING

  • Weave in all ends securely on the inside of the sweater.
  • Block sweater if desired.

Conclusion

Congratulations! Your sunflower sweater is complete—stylish, cheerful, and perfect for any season. The modular construction allows for easy customization in size and color. The sunflower appliqué is fully optional, allowing you to create as many or as few as you wish to suit your style.

Pattern Corrections & Tips

  • Correction: Ensure you do not twist the foundation chain before joining in the round for the yoke.
  • Tip: For neater ribbing, keep your slip stitches and single crochets loose.
  • Tip: Try the sweater on as you work the body and sleeves to ensure the desired fit and adjust as needed.
  • If you want shorter or longer sleeves/body, simply adjust the number of rounds.
  • Add as many or as few flowers as you like—sample uses 19.
