Cards To Send In Lockdown: Etsy #StandWithSmall

This post contains affiliate links to small businesses on Etsy.

Warning – post contains swears!

Most of you will know I’m a big fan of snail mail. I’ve had the same penpal for 30 years now (Hi Michelle!) and writing letters and cards is something I’ll always cherish, especially when I miss people. Today I want to share some Etsy UK Stationery Finds with you today, as part of their #StandWithSmall campaign.

We’ve been in lockdown for almost 4 weeks in the UK and I’m so grateful for all our posties and delivery drivers keeping the mail moving! I’ve received my prescription, indie food deliveries and cards from friends and family which have lifted my spirits so much.

Here are a few of my favourite UK stationery designers on Etsy if you also want to support small businesses and find some cards to send in lockdown.

Oh Squirrel stock all handmade cards using Katie’s beautiful handwriting, floral designs and fun typography. Most designs have an eco-friendly focus too (bonus!), the cards are made using biodegradable glitter, pressed flowers and recycled board. The floral handmade cards are also a great way to celebrate a spring lockdown birthday and bring nature to someone.

Daphne Rosa offers positive and playful home and paper goods with a newly launched collection of colour block cards. Kate has an amazing eye for colour combos and the hand lettered messages are just perfect for sending a pick me up during the tough days in lockdown.

I Miss Your Face Card

Next up, is the bright, playful and inclusive designs of cheerful Canadian Angela Chick. Not only is Angela someone I seek out for chats and banter online, she’s a top notch greetings card designer for pretty much every occasion. I send her cards to pals on the regular and they never fail to make me smile.

When It's Raining Card

Clare Gray is another eco-friendly stationery designer and she’s local to Cambridge too! Her cards are printed with vegetable based inks, all recyclable and no plastic packaging either. I recently tried out some of Clare’s gift wrap too and it was so luxurious.

Calming Happy Vibes Card

When you just want to get to the point, Jenna’s latest design for her shop Pilfered is absolutely perfect. I’ve already sent this to the bestie and the guy I’m dating just to get my point across that lockdown is hard without seeing them! Jenna is also out there working on the frontline in healthcare and is an absolute legend.

I Really Fucking Miss You Card

I hope you enjoyed that stationery round up today – all UK based designers, all women and all working hard to keep their businesses going during this difficult time. Each of them are combining their post box drops on a daily exercise outing, or working with couriers for collections if they are self-isolating. It’s amazing to hear how so many small businesses have rapidly adapted to this crazy situation and to ensure they are keeping themselves and others safe.

10 Of The Best Christmas Decorations From Etsy

It’s basically been Christmas market mayhem around here lately, so the blog hasn’t been as busy as I had hoped. I recently took part in the Etsy Made Local market in Cambridge and it was SO FESTIVE! We had massive screens with snow videos on and endless Christmas tunes inside the venue. It was an exhausting couple of days, but amazing to see so many locals enjoying our makes and taking the time to visit.

I got the chance to have a nose at other people’s stalls and found some amazing Christmas Decorations all available on Etsy.

The top row are decorations that have caught my eye on Instagram lately and the bottom two rows are all from makers of the Cambridge Made group (the Etsy Team for Cambridge). It makes me so proud to be part of the team when I see how talented everyone is!

I also couldn’t write this post without mentioning how pleased I am that people have liked the Wheelie Festive Bikes! I’m wheelie wheelie happy that I have had to paint so many 🙂 the red has been the most popular so far.

Oh Really, Red?

Red is definitely one of my favourite colours. It never used to be, but it’s funny how your tastes change….I just wish the tomatoes on my plants would turn red!

Yesterday I had such a wonderful gift in the mail from a dear Twitter friend who I chat to on a daily basis. It is the most perfect gift for me, a red bicycle notebook!

Buttons Buttons Buttons

Today I’m going to share with you my love for buttons!

This week has been rather manic with a big work event in the day job, so I haven’t had  time to create anything and have been pretty frazzled. Especially as I was also helping to plan our WI event to which 130 people came! However, in all the madness I have had time to lust over some lovely buttons to keep me cheery.

Here’s a few button themed things I found this week…..

A fantastic tutorial for Homemade Shrink Plastic Buttons from super crafty, super friendly blogger Georgina Giles. Look how pretty they are!

These rubber stamps are just so sweet. If you fancy some, check out Skull and Cross Buns, there are a great collection of handcarved stamps in the shop!

These buttons are not just buttons but they are made from CANDY! How awesome is that?! They are by Andie’s Speciality Sweets on Etsy and I want to order masses of them to have bowls of button sweets around the house 🙂

I also listed this oversized button ring in my own Etsy shop this week and I just love it. I have some more oversized rings and friendship bracelets coming soon 🙂

Are you as mad about buttons?!

Cambridge Etsy Craft Party 2012

Etsy Craft Party on claireabellemakes

Over the last few weeks, I have been busy organising an Etsy Craft Party which took place on Friday 24th August. What’s a craft party you ask? In the words of Etsy…

“Craft Party is a time to get to know your neighbours and exercise your creative spirit. Craft Parties take place around the world when communities come together to participate in art, craft, design and DIY in every form. Anyone can organise a Craft Party and anyone can participate — the power is literally in your hands!”

Etsy arranged a simple ‘meet-up’ site with leaders inviting their participants and planning activities. What caught my interest, was that it was a global craft up, with parties taking place around the world, at the same time. Fact fans may like to know that almost 500 parties took place, with close to 5000 participants. That’s a lot of crafty people!

Fellow bloggers Crafty Painter and Suzie Makes put their thinking caps on to help me organise. The parties were sponsored by American craft store Michaels (think Hobbycraft)  who kindly provided a FREE box of supplies! Check it out!

We were over the moon about this! Paint, papers and scrapbooking materials galore! If these goodies didn’t ignite creativity, we were stuffed!

We had organised a picnic (yes, I know British summer sucks) and planned to dash to the local pub if the rain made an appearance. We rocked up to the local green with cakes and craft supplies aplenty. A small crowd at first, which grew to 23 in total throughout the afternoon.

I knew almost all the people who attended, via our newly formed WI group, but many of the attendees had not talked to each other before. Some new faces came along too and shared their fantastic scrapbooking and book binding skills. As cheesy as it sounds, it really felt as though sitting in a park, collectively crafting, brought us all together as new friends.

Naturally there was an immense amount of cake. We ignored the rain (see the drops on the lid of the bakewell tarts) and stuffed our faces. Sugar overload. Probably not a good idea with embroidery needles and scissors around!

The theme for the craft party was ‘Wish You Were Here’ so we planned some crafts to reflect our city. Bicycle themed embroidery and wooden painted postcards featured.

Some people indulged in papercraft. Look at the fab page from Miss Dotty’s smash book!

Some made friendship bracelets (quite apt for all the new friends made) and learned basic crochet stitches, whilst others came with in-progress projects.

By the end of the afternoon and 5 hours of crafting under the threatening grey skies of Cambridge, we had experienced a few rain drops, made some pretty things and all gained stiff backs and dead legs. Picnic blankets are not all that comfy it seems!

Etsy Craft Party on claireabellemakes

Etsy UK and Etsy US tweeted us throughout and we posted updates of our makes on Instagram. Although some parties such as NYC wouldn’t take place until hours after ours, we had US twitter followers commenting on our party. The Brooklyn party was on a much bigger scale (queues aplenty) and Vancouver even had an after party planned for theirs, but our small picnic somehow still felt as important.

It was a fabulous afternoon. New friends made, new crafts learnt. Sharing out the unused craft supplies at the end of the afternoon came with great excitement. You’d think we’d all got a new pair of shoes or a sparkly diamond ring each. It’s amazing how exciting crafters can get about a new pair of scissors hehe!

We decided ‘crafternoons’ should be a regular thing. Inspired by Etsy’s idea, we shall meet again.

Please also take time to check out this fabulous post about the NYC craft party by starcrossed smile!
