Crochet Snake
- 100% Cotton Yarn (Aizen’s Let Loops and Threads Natural Cotton Bulky)
- 6 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Darning needle
Steps
Start with a Magic Circle:
- Leave a little bit of a tail end.
- Create a magic circle by wrapping the yarn around your fingers and pulling it through, making a loop.
Chain [Ch] 3:
- After forming the magic circle, chain 3 times.
Create Double Crochets [DC]:
- Make 12 double crochets into the magic circle.
- To make a double crochet: Yarn over, insert your hook into the circle, yarn over again and pull through (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the last 2 loops.
Close the First Round:
- Pull the tail end tight to close the circle.
- Join with a slip stitch in the third chain of the beginning chain-3.
Start the Second Round – Ch 2:
- Chain 2 to start the next round. This chain does not count as a stitch.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC):
- Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the next stitch from front to back to front.
- Complete double crochet.
Double Crochet in Space Between Stitches:
- Yarn over, insert your hook into the space between the posts of the previous round’s stitches and complete a double crochet.
Repeat – Increase Round:
- Continue alternating FPDC and a DC in the spaces between the posts around the circle.
- Join with a slip stitch at the beginning.
Next Rounds – Increasing the Number of DC per Space:
- For each new round, increase the number of DC made in each gap (e.g., 3 DC in the next round, 4 DC in the round after that, etc.).
- Always make an FPDC around each previous FPDC.
Final Round Considerations:
- Continue increasing the number of DCs in each space until the desired size is reached.
- Make a slip stitch to finish the round.
Adding a Hanging Loop (Optional):
- If you want to add a loop for hanging, after completing the final round, chain a number of stitches (e.g., 10).
- Join the chain back to the starting point with a slip stitch.
- Chain 1 and fasten off.
Finishing:
- Trim the yarn, leaving a tail.
- Use a darning needle to sew in the end securely and to close any gaps in the center of the magic circle.
Tips
- If your stitches feel too tight or too loose, adjust your hook size accordingly.
- For smaller versions like coasters, simply do fewer rounds.
