Materials Needed:

  • Sweet Snuggles Light Yarn from Loops and Threads at Michael’s
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • 12 mm safety eyes
  • Pair of scissors
  • Polyester stuffing (available at Walmart)
  • Stitch marker (or bobby pin)
  • Yarn needle (optional)

Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • st – stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • inc – increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec – decrease (single crochet two stitches together)

Instructions:

1. Start with a Slip Knot:

  • Wrap the yarn around two fingers to create an X.
  • Turn your fingers to see your nails, go underneath the first strand of yarn with your hook, grab the second strand, and pull through to form a slipknot.

2. Magic Ring Alternative (for beginners):

  • Chain 2.

3. Round 1:

  • In the second chain from the hook, do 7 sc. You should have a total of 7 stitches.

4. Round 2:

  • Inc in each stitch around. (14 sc)

5. Round 3-4:

  • Sc in each stitch around. (14 sc)

6. Preparing for the Eyes:

  • Between rounds 3 and 4, place the 12 mm safety eyes. For eyes closer together, place one safety eye, skip one st, and place the second one in the next st.

7. Round 5: (Decreasing)

  • Sc in the first stitch, place a stitch marker.
  • Perform an invisible decrease: Insert hook into the front loops of the next two stitches, yarn under, pull through, yarn over, and pull through both loops. Repeat this for the next two stitches. Do this around.
  • You should have 8 stitches remaining.

8. Tentacles (Last Round):

  • Working in the front loops only:
    • Sl st in the next st, ch 2, sl st in the second chain from the hook, and sl st in the next st of the head.
    • Repeat this process to make a total of 8 tentacles.

9. Finishing:

  • Cut your yarn, leaving a 15 cm (6 inches) tail.
  • Stuff the octopus with polyester stuffing.
  • Using the yarn needle or smaller crochet hook, weave the yarn tail through the back loops of the final round to close the opening. Secure by tying off and cutting excess yarn.
  • Push any remaining yarn tail inside the octopus head to hide it.

Your cute baby octopus is now complete!
