DIY: Kate Spade Inspired Rope Bracelet

Happy Friday! Here’s a quick jewellery DIY for you all, just in time for a crafty weekend.

Today I am showing you how to make a clasped rope bracelet inspired by the Kate Spade Learn The Ropes bracelet. It’s super simple I promise and takes less than 20 minutes to make!

This is the original version by Kate Spade priced at $32 each.

You will need the following jewellery findings. I got mine from eBay from this seller, but these items are widely available in craft stores. Make sure your jump rings will fit through the bail end you have chosen (most will state size in mm).

I searched for a while to find rope which looks satin in texture and is therefore comfortable to wear as a bracelet. This piping cord used widely in curtain upholstery was available by the metre on eBay from this seller. Make sure to buy the non fringed version.

IMPORTANT – When choosing your cord, be sure to check the circumference so that it fits easily into your bail caps. I chose 7 mm cord and 7.3 mm caps.

Tools required are…..

So let’s get started. First you will need to measure a length of cord around your wrist and cut to size.

Be sure to use sharp scissors to minimise the unravelling of the cord.

Next up, to help the ends of the rope cord go easily into the bail caps, you will need to tape them. Remember not to tape too far up the rope cord otherwise it will be seen once the bail is attached.

Now cover the tape in your super glue. Be careful not to use too much, as you could end up sticky for the next step!

Attaching a bail is as easy as pushing it onto the cord. It is best to leave the glue to dry for a while before attaching any findings.

Repeat for the other end!

Now all that’s left is to add your clasp. This video shows how to open and close jump rings.

Close the clasp and your bracelet is complete!Β I am planning to load up my bracelets in lots of pretty pastel tones.

  1. hi: a little help, please. new jewelry maker. looked for the 7.3 bails on e-bay – only had 7 – would they be okay. do you think a store like joanne’s would have what I need. the bracelets are adorable and a nice easy project (or so it appears). thanks for any help you can give.

    1. Hi Barb. I think any bail size is fine, provided your cord size is slightly less so it fits inside. It should be snug. Most craft stores will have the jewellery making supplies, but I am not sure about the cord as it is upholstery piping. I hope that helps! Once you have the supplies, it really is a simple project!

  2. Hi

Thanks for the tutorial on the bracelet. I have some cord that I wanted to use but I didn’t know how the ends were finished. I thought they were glued but was not sure,so you just answered my question. Thanks I’m going to try this. I have a big street fair coming up and wanted to try some different types of bracelets.
