DIY Hat Charm

Today I’ve teamed up with fashion brand Boohoo to bring you a DIY Hat Charm tutorial. I’m an accessories gal through and through and I adore hats, G says I suit them. So, this week I thought long and hard for ways to customise a hat, and came up with a quick and easy beaded charm for you to try.

You could also use this DIY to make a bag charm or even a keyring if you attach a clip – it’s up to you!

DIY-Hat-Charm-ClaireabellemakesYou will need the following items:

Note – Make sure your jump rings are the correct size for your charms and your head pins are the correct size for your beads.

For this DIY, you will need to know how to open and close jump rings as well as learning how to make a loop. I would recommend this You Tube channel for instructions, or if you are interested in more jewellery techniques you could try the Beads and Baubles online course.

Using your flat nosed pliers, start by attaching each of your charms to a small jump ring and then a piece of chain around 2 inches in length.

DIY-Feather-Charm-For-Hat Next, thread your bead selection onto each of the head pins. I went for some turquoise beads to match the feather charms I had. Add a piece of chain around 1.5 inches in length.

DIY-Beaded-Hat-Charm Using the wire cutters, trim the head pin and make a loop for each beaded piece.

Now you should have 4 lengths for your charm. Attach each one in turn to the large jump ring and then attach the large jump ring to the split ring.

Bead-And-Feather-Charm-for-Hat I then used the split ring to attach the charm to the ribbon around my hat. Depending on your hat, you may need to add a ribbon, stitch your charm to the hat, or use a clip on the split ring.

Thanks so much to Boohoo for asking me to DIY one of their pieces! There will be another fashion DIY coming in December, so stay tuned!

What are you favourite ways to customise clothes and accessories? Everyone loves a bit of DIY fashion right?

*The hat was sent to me free of charge for DIY use.  You can read more about how I work with brands and bloggers in my disclosure policy.

If you are a DIY beginner, there are some great projects that require very little skill (think gluing and cutting) and in contrast, some that require a little more experience such as wire wrapping and sewing. This handy index of projects by difficulty level is at the back of the book.

I tried out a couple of projects from the book in the accessories section (of course!).

Now I just need to book a summer holiday so I can wear these floral embellished sunglasses!
