I am too excited! Pumpkin Spiced Latte has FINALLY arrived in the UK Starbucks stores. Jeez I hate that we are always about a month behind North America! Anyway, rant over.
Today’s DIY is for this super cute Crochet Pumpkin Coffee Cup Sleeve. I am not really a fan of the cardboard sleeves as I find them quite wasteful (even though I know they are made from recycled materials).
As G and I visit our local coffee store most weekends, we purchased the reusable cups (pictured), decorated them with metallic Sharpies and decided on handmade coffee cup sleeves.
Where to start?! You’ll need to know a few crochet stitches for this one (all expressed in UK terms):
- ch = chain
- ss = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet
- htr = half treble crochet
- tr = treble crochet
I used a 3.5mm hook and a selection of cotton yarns in DK weight – cream, orange and green.
I have linked to various crochet YouTube tutorials above to demonstrate the stitches. Please note – I have adapted instructions for a crochet pumpkin appliqué from this pattern.
For the sleeve you will need to make a rectangle:
- Using cream yarn, ch 32 + 1
- Work 12 rows of dc
- Finish off leaving a length of yarn to join together
- Using ss, join the two short ends of the rectangle
- Your rectangle should now be a sleeve!
How to make an applique crochet pumpkin:
- Using the orange yarn, make a magic loop
- ch3, then 15 tr into the ring
- ss into the top of ch3 to join (round 1 complete)
- Pull the tail of the magic loop to close the centre
- dc and htr in the next stitch (start of round 2)
- 2 htr in each of the next 5 stitches
- 4 dc – this is the base of the pumpkin
- 2 htr in each of the next 5 stitches
- htr and dc in the next stitch
- ss in the next stitch to create the top
- ss into the tr from round 1 (end of round 2)
How to make the stalk of the crochet pumpkin:
- Attach the green cotton yarn to the top of the pumpkin
- ch4, then dc in each stitch
- Secure by sewing the pumpkin to the sleeve using white cotton
G has not been left out and has this snazzy Cath Kidson Cowboy Fabric coffee cup sleeve.
Please let me know if you have any queries about the pattern – I’m no crochet expert and have just written the instructions as I would understand them.
I would love to see photos if you make a coffee sleeve. Don’t forget to tweet me and happy crafting!
Toodles!
