Goodness me am I excited about my guest bloggers this month for Share The Love! I get pretty happy when I find a new crochet blog and I know that as a good fair few of you enjoy the craft, you are going to love this Valentines Crochet Notebook Sweater by Tanya! The pattern is written in US terms throughout. Anyway I’ll hand on over now…..
Hey everyone! It’s Tanya from Little Things Blogged! I really love stationery items! I love having notebooks lying around or in my bag so as to write down everything; from my daily schedule, blog post schedules or even ideas that pop into my head when talking a walk or drinking coffee! So when Claire asked me if I was willing to prepare something crochet related for Valentine’s Day, I immediately thought of making a notebook/journal sweater! Here’s an easy way to create a modern Valentine themed sweater for your notebook/ journal:
You will need:
- Red & grey worsted weight yarn
- Tape Measure
- 4.5mm (US 7) crochet hook
- Embroidery needle
Measurements
For a notebook measuring 30x21cm (12×8 in). If your notebook is smaller than that no worries! The pattern can easily be customized to fit your notebook measurements!
Pattern
Using 4.5mm (US 7) crochet hook and grey yarn,
Ch 35, hdc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 2 and turn (33)
R1-15: hdc in each st across, ch 2 and turn (33)
Change to red yarn,
R16-35: hdc in each st across, ch 2 and turn (33)
R36: hdc in back loops in each st across, ch 2 and turn (33)
*This will create the turning point to place your original notebook cover inside.
R37-40: hdc in each st across, ch 2 and turn (33)
Now repeat the exact same process at your starting ch
With grey, attach new yarn by sl st at the beginning of your ch
R1: hdc in back loops in each st across, ch 2 and turn (33)
R2-5: hdc in each st across, ch 2 and turn (33)
Fasten off.
Taking your embroidery needle sew the side pieces together to form a little pocket. Repeat on the other side.
Weave in any ends and dress up your notebook.
Heart:
With red yarn and 4.5mm (US 7) hook,
Ch4, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch1 and turn (3)
R1: inc, sc 1, inc, ch 1 and turn (5)
R2: inc, sc 3, inc, ch 1 and turn (7)
R3: inc, sc 5, inc, ch 1 and turn (9)
R4: inc, sc 7, inc, ch 1 and turn (11)
R5: inc, sc 9, inc, ch 1 and turn (13)
R6: inc, sc 11, inc, ch 1 and turn (15)
R7: sc in each st across, ch 1 and turn (15)
R8: inc, sc 13, inc, ch 1 and turn (17)
R9: inc, sc 15, inc, ch 1 and turn (19)
R10:sc 9, ch 1 and turn (9)
R11: dec, sc 7, ch 1 and turn (8)
R12: dec, sc 4, dec, ch 1 and turn (6)
R13: dec, sc 2, dec, ch 1 and turn (4)
R14: dec, dec, (2)
Fasten off.
Attach new yarn on the other side and sc 9 sts (leaving the middle st of the heart center unworked)
R1:sc 9, ch 1 and turn (9)
R2: dec, sc 7, ch 1 and turn (8)
R3: dec, sc 4, dec, ch 1 and turn (6)
R4: dec, sc 2, dec, ch 1 and turn (4)
R5: dec, dec, (2)
Do NOT fasten off, but instead sc around the entire edge of your heart. Upon reaching the lower part, sc3 in the middle st of your initial ch 4. Continue sc around and when you reach the heart cleavage do a dec. Repeat sc until the end and sl st to beginning sc. Fasten off.
Weave in any ends.
Now you are going to sew your heart on the notebook cover. Taking an embroidery needle, sew the heart on the notebook leaving an opening (approx. 2 sts) for your pen. Leave the upper part of the heart open as a pocket! Weave in ends and fasten off.
I hope you will enjoy your new notebook sweater as much as I will! And of course I’m wishing you a happy Valentine’s Day!

Love love love <3 This makes me know I need to learn to crochet! I tried so many times and got in a mess but This inspires me to try and pick up my hook again 🙂 I particularly love that it holds a pen under the cute little heart! perfect!
Have you tried a class Rachel? I found a couple of classes were enough for me to go away and practice alone.
I learnt from YouTube videos , I’m not great but it’s been two years and I’m getting more ambitious ! I was looking for help getting my bobbin back in after it fell out my sewing machine , my granny always done that ! I bought it thinking just because I had a sewing machine meant I would be able to make things? For that I think I defo need classes ! I found so may things on YouTube you can do yourself now it’s a fountain of knowledge, I always used it to listen to music? But I typed in learn to crochet , but crochet tutorial or something specific like crochet hat tutorial , and you should find something for your style of learning. One was great but the woman’s voice was so patronising I couldn’t watch lol . It’s great once you get going , I have a yarn stash and a lifetime of ‘to-do’ patterns already ?
That is such a great idea!
Great pattern! So sweet 🙂
What a gorgeous idea! I love that Tanya has called this a sweater – how lovely to think of a notebook wrapped up in a nice cosy sweater! I also love the opening in the heart for the pen – I’m always losing my pen x
I usually leave work with a pencil in my hair every day and only realise when I go to put my bike helmet on. This DIY would help me with that issue too!
Love notebooks, love hearts and often custom cover my notebooks with fabric. Will def give the crochet idea a try- as soon as I perfect my crochet skills! Thanx for sharing:)
I love this project! So cute :’)
This note book is gorgeous! I’ve just learned to crochet and this seems like it would be a fun and manageable project. I love that the heart holds a pen! xx
Let us know if you give it a try Jess!
This is too adorable! Such a cute project 🙂

Hello, I came here from the Sew Many Ways linky party.
This notebook cover is so cute! The idea of leaving room for a pen behind the heart is really clever.
